Solartron Metrology Launches a ProfiNet® gateway for its Orbit®3 Network
Solartron Metrology Launches a ProfiNet® gateway for its Orbit®3 Network Solartron Metrology has just launched its latest Protocol Interface Module (PIM), which connects its versatile Orbit®3 network with any ProfiNet® based PLC. The PIM makes it simple to network up to 150 Solartron Digital contact probes, non contact measurement sensors, and third party sensors, which can then be easily output to any ProfiNet® based PLC or Network. This stand alone, Din Rail mounted module provides one ProfiNet® port and one ORBIT®3 port which can power up to ten sensors.
With the PIM, potential users will have an easier time setting up sensors for automation. To set up, you merely plug the PIM into a Laptop, and then identify all sensors that are on an Orbit module “stack.” You also adjust any Profinet output settings. All address data is saved to the PIM module, and then you identify the PIM on a network. Solartron’s Orbit®3 network is the first of its kind that can network both Digital contact probes, as well as non-contact Sensors, including Laser and Confocal on the same interface. The PIM can also tie into 3rd party sensors via the Encoder Interface Module, meaning you need just one connection for a multitude of sensors.
Test and Measurement
Understanding the properties, movements and limitation of materials is vital to design and construction to ensure a fit for purpose end product. Using Solartron Metrology's sensors and Orbit® Networking system (which can integrate third party sensors), qualities such as displacement, stretch, strain, pressure and temperature can be measured and recorded.
Testing for deformation of a structure
The most common types of sensor used to test for deformation of a structure is Absolute Displacement sensors. Both can be brought together using Orbit®, Solartron Metrology’s Multi Channel data processing system.
By fixing one end of a wire and taking it around a vessel and attaching the other end to the core of a displacement transducer. Any change in the diameter of the vessel is related to the position of the transducer core.
Concrete testing
Testing fixtures supplied for building materials such as the manufacture of concrete is important to ensure of the correct properties of the material and understand it's capabilities. A fixture with a drain and Digital Probes can measure any bending of hardened concrete.
Manufacturers producing mechanical testing instruments and welding machines must gather data in order to measure physical displacement. Solartron Metrology’s products are suitable for this type of application due to their rugged construction and high accuracy.
Materials testing for power generation
Data logging and processing systems and equipment can be used to provide information about properties of materials under high thermal and mechanical stress. Solartron Metrology are able to provide linear encoders to provide data feedback into the Orbit® 3 Network.
Test instruments supplied to the civil engineering industry can be used to survey the mechanical properties of soil and rock conditions. Transducers can be used instead of traditional manual dial gauges to improve the process.
Process Automation
Ensuring components are correctly positioned reduces the possibility of error and costly down-time if processes have to come to a stand-still. Using measurement sensors, manufacturers can ensure the position of tools and assemblies.
The use of robots and automated processes is increasingly visible in industries across the world. Speed and less reliance on manpower is critical in many industrial processes and many of Solartron's sensors and electronics are featured within this field.
Automated insert toolsgauging
Retrofitting a gauge probe onto an insert tool to give true position feedback is easy to do and has become commonplace in many high volume mechatronic assembly applications where components may be small or fragile and it is critical that they are positioned precisely.
In-Machine Gauging and Detection Productscurves, such as airfoils
Embedded measurement tools for in-process applications is a growing demand on the market. When a part is being milled or drilled, stopping the process for verification or controlling post process the part is a lost of time. We must keep in mind that cycles time for production is essential.
